I don't know about you but this year flew by! So when it came to choosing songs for SPK's 2015 Xmas Mix - it was really hard. I ended with tracks that I had on repeat most of the year. I don't judge music by how many sound cloud hits there are, or who they toured with or if they released a stellar album or not. At SPK we are about the single. So in no particular order, here are my favourite tracks of 2015. Hope you enjoy the mix and we'll be back in 2016 with more great music from down under!

Rat & Co - Spring II

Get ready to vibe. Get ready for new sounds. Get ready for music that will challenge you. Get ready for Rat & Co. The four piece hail from Melbourne and have recently released 'Spring I' & 'Spring II'. Both tracks are a celebration of seasonal change. 'Spring II' is my favourite of the two and can only really be described in one word - sublime.

Cameron Avery - We're Just Making It Worse Feat. Alexandra Savior

I'm a sucker for romantic ballads. The new single 'We're Just Making It Worse' from Tame Impala's bassist Cameron Avery is smooth and heartfelt. The beautiful piano melody and sparse percussion keep the track flowing. The call and response vocals from American songstress Alexandra Savior and Avery keep things reflectively modern and at the same time old fashioned.

Buzz Kull - Nausea

Today was one of those hot ass days in Sydney, where I should have gone to the beach instead of Christmas shopping in the CBD #lifefail. Anyway, after feeling a little dizzy/sunstroke I was happy to come home and listen to the new single (conveniently titled) 'Nausea' by Sydney dark-wave-synth-master Buzz Kull. It's just what the doctor ordered - moody, driving, post-punk goodness. You can catch Buzz Kull play a live set tomorrow when Velvet Cave presents LO-FI // SCI-FI at the Chippendale Hotel in Sydney. An impressive lineup including New War (Melb), SPLASHH (UK/NY),  Green Buzzard (Syd), AU.RA (UK) to name a few! This gig is not to be missed. Details here.

Anatole - Colours

Before I even heard a note of 'Colours' I was drawn to the artwork. Geometrical shapes, space, collage, what's not to love? The art work in question is made by a talented Sydney artist Rory McKay, he also does visuals for Jonathan Baker aka Antole's live shows. 'Colours' has a rich orchestral soundscapes that engulfs you with it's sombre beauty. It's music I could see being used in a Miyazaki film. Pure bliss.

Us The Band - And I Will

Besides having one of the worst band name I've heard all year round, Us The Band sound f%&king dope! The Sydney duo regard Ohio punk-rockers Cloud Nothings as an inspiration (another band I love). New single 'And I Will' is a frenzy piercing lead riffs, pounding drums and sludgy vocals. Be on the look out next year when their debut EP 'But Where Do They Go' is released on February 19 through Sydney label Rice Is Nice.

The Holy Soul - Precious

I have no idea why I have never shared this band with you. I've seen these guys on many stages at different venues in and around Sydney the last 8 or so years (maybe more?!). The Holy Soul is a rock band that speaks no bull shit. There is no unnecessary flash, no gimmicky licks, no bogus lyrics. It's straight up rock'n'roll baby. 'Precious' is their lead single from 'Fortean Times' (their new LP, produced by Gareth Liddiard - The Drones). The album is out now. Take a listen here.
