Kinder - Black And White Burning

Maybe the wind will blow sand over the tracks and you and your horse will never find your way back home. Or maybe some young lads from Melbourne driving across the dessert happen to give you and your beloved Ed a lift. The brainchild of guitarists Ben Maton (Frowning Clouds) and Kieran Daly (Messengers, Hayley Couper, Willow), joined Tom Barlow (Dirt Farmer) on drums and bassist Joe Daly (Messengers, Backyard) to make up new super group Kinder. The band just released their second single ‘Black And White Burning’. It's clever jangly pop that makes you want to buy a horse. You'll find this track on their debut LP ‘Dorigo Rise’ (due to be released sometime in 2015). Yee Ha.

Going Swimming - Your Sister

Older sisters are the best. Growing up, my mates sister Mercedes was 4 years older then us. She would buy us booze, drive us places and lie on our behalf. One time she bought us some fine bourbon & coke cans. And my mate Billy told his parents he was going to stay at my house and I told my parents that I was staying at Billy's. We spent that night skating around town, drinking cans and shoving fireworks into anything we could find - mail boxes, toilets, wheelie bins and a rotting pumpkin. Yep, it was a wild and crazy night. Mercedes kept our secret and I don't think I ever thanked her at the time (being 14 and all). So here is a song for you, conveniently titled 'Your Sister' by Melbourne scuzzy garage band Going Swimming.

Boats - Rabbits

Weaving gently through an embracing ocean of heart felt musical depth is solo Melbourne musician Boats (aka Blake Paterson). He just released his new EP 'Release' last Friday. Amongst lead single 'Shallows' and last years 'Spiders Soul', there are some beautifully composed tracks. 'Rabbits' quietly drifts along a shimmering wave until about the 1 minute 50 mark, where it instantly radiates a stronger glow.

Hedge Fund - Look Who's Back

Sink your teeth into the new single from Sydney band Hedge Fund. Titled ‘Look Who’s Back’, the song might be a peek into the thoughts of a sexual predator or the world of frontman William Colvin. Or both, who knows? Either way it's dark, sexy and catchy as hell. If you want to see Hedge Fund live, they will be performing for free this Friday at The Sly Fox in Enmore. Some other dope bands are also on the bill - details here.

Magic America - Come and Goes

Listening to the new Magic America single ‘Comes And Goes’ reminds me of a great Sydney psych band I used to listen to a couple years back The Morning After Girls - I bet Magic America are fans. And I bet they also listen to a lot of Spacemen 3, Brian Jonestown Massacre and Dead Meadow. These guys create authentic psych music, it's like taking a trip back to the mid 1960s. Look out for their debut EP (released later this year) and catch them live at your local when they tour.

Teaser Pony - Champion Fullback

I used to play for Collingwood back in the 1970's, they used to say "That bloke Jack Austin, he goes off like a box of firecrackers!" Now days I spend most of my time going for long walks and sorting though my old Bachelor Magazines. I could have been one of the greatest fullbacks of my generation and now look at me. Anyway, I stumbled upon Teaser Pony's new single 'Champion Fullback' and it reminded me of those good old days. Their new 7" will be available in May through the good folk at Cinnamon Records. And you can catch them live at The Tote in Melbourne this Sunday (19th) for the Renegade Pub Footy League 2015 Season Fundraiser Gig. Fair dinkum.

BANFF - The Great Unknown

BANFF is the solo project of Brisbane musician Benjamin Forbes. The production and composition on his new single 'The Great Unknown' is magnificent. BANFF is a great songwriter and beyond any doubt, is at the forefront of worthy Australian music.

Fountaineer - Grand Old Flags

You've hitched a ride down an old and dusty American highway. Headed for the small town of Sierra Vista in the Cochise County, Arizona. Your driver Earl strikes a bizarre conversation about his great grandfather making flags for the confederate troops in the Civil War back in 1861. Suddenly 'Grand Old Flags' by Fountaineer plays on the radio and you both give each other a weird smile. Coincidence? Maybe.

Born Joy Dead - Stones In My Shoe

Brisbane band Born Joy Dead describe themselves as a 'Caribbean Hillbilly Beach Goth Band' and last week they released a new single titled 'Stones In My Shoes'. Sporting some hipstery beards and small beady eyes, the bands lyrics "get into my car" seem kinda creepy. But they do write a dam catchy tune. So maybe I would hitch a ride.
