I can't believe 2014 is over! Time sure does fly when you're listening to good Aussie music. I'm proud to share with you our second SPK Xmas Mix for 2014. Most of these artists have had a huge year or are definitely going to have a massive 2015 (keep an eye out for new bands like TEES, NOIRE and White Caves) As always, the mix isn't in any particular order, just 10 good songs from 10 rad artists. Enjoy the mix, the silly season and we will see you in 2015 with more great Aussie music.

Fascinator - Showin' Off

Over a year ago NY based experimental musician Fascinator (Johnny Mackay - Children Collide) gave us his hypnotic single 'Girl I Want'. He is back with a brand new single title 'Showin' Off(Jagwar Ma edit). The track has flutes, smooth bass licks and a very beautiful string section. With lyrics like 'You got a thing for leprechauns and tiny little ginger bits' you wonder what the hell is Johnny talking about?! (maybe the Irish). Either way, He's got our attention and I hope we'll be hearing more music from him in 2015.

Eleanor Dunlop - Rollin' On

From the opening drum lick on 'Rollin' On' (similar to that of 2003's party anthem 'Bandages' from Hot Hot Heat), I knew I was going to be a fan of Eleanor Dunlop's new single. Maybe it's because it reminds me of my youth, maybe I really like the single art and maybe it's because Dunlop has written a song about not letting the good times end. She says: “Rollin’ On is about not wanting a good thing to end. Similar to when you’re at a party or out with someone really great and you don’t ever want that moment to end." And I have to agree, when the good times roll you never want them to end! 'Rollin' On' is a new direction from Dunlop's piano driven, darker sounds heard on her debut EP, which now see's her embrace a new rock 'n' roll direction. 'Rollin' On' is the first taste from her follow up EP that will be released sometime in 2015.

Tales In Space - Holidaze

It's been over a year since I shared 'In A Million Places At Once' by the talented two piece Tales In Space. The guys are back with a brand new single titled 'Holidaze' from their new LP ‘Formula’. 'Holidaze' is a perfect blend of indie pop, electro and a hint of psych pop (think early Dandy Warhols). The production is real smooth, with plenty of loops, spacey samples and some infectious keyboard hooks make 'Holidaze' a perfect pop gem. If you like what you hear then check out the rest of the LP 'Formula' here

Crepes - Ain't Horrible

Relax, unwind, and let new Melbourne band Crepes serenade you with their new tasty single 'Ain't Horrible'. The five piece originally from Ballarat are now based in Melbourne and are fronted by Tim Karmouche, who also plays in one of my favourite Melbourne psych bands Hollow Everdaze. It's slacker pop with some really beautiful guitar arrangements. 'Ain't Horrible' is the first single taken from Crepes' forthcoming debut EP, due for release in 2015. Bon Appétit.

Gunslingers - Paradox

Melbourne’s Gunslingers are back with a new single off their upcoming debut album DJANGUS. Recorded by Paul Maybury (King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard) ‘Paradox’ carries plenty of energy and thunderous rhythm, a pounding drum beat and howling vocals that would make any real gunslinger crap his pants. Be sure to catch these guys live in 2015.

Spirit Faces - Cloudplay

Sydney multi-instrumentalist Pete Covington is the man behind new electronic outfit Spirit Faces. They just released their second single ‘Cloudplay’ through new Sydney record label TEEF. The angelic vocals belong to fellow Sydney songstress BUOY. The song floats around a cloud of marching beats with BUOY's vocals front and centre, surrounded by simple yet innovative instrumentation. Look out for Spirt Faces' debut EP titled 'Bedroom Music' some time in early 2015.

Jeremy Neale - The News

One of my favourite Brisbane acts has to be Jeremy Neale. Frontman to the splendid Velociraptor. Neale has been keeping busy working on his solo music. Last week he released his brand new single 'The News'. It's a new direction for Neale (and a new look). It's got his signature indie pop guitar riffs and feels like an 80's birthday party with a A Flock Of Seagulls and Bananarama. Superb.

Sloppy Kiss Soirée - A Silly Girl For A Real Dumb Boy

Sloppy Kiss Soirée are a three piece from Sydney who released a low punk Ep titled 'Schnitzelphrenia' five months ago. It's tidy lo-fi garage punk which was recorded by Ali Jeffery (The Dead Heads). Last month the guys released a chilled out country tinged single titled 'A Silly Girl For A Real Dumb Boy'. Containing lyrics like "You're like Duke Nukem to my Doom" and "You're like sour scream to my sweet chilli baby", you know these guys aren't taking themselves too seriously. And why would you, summer is just around the corner and this song is a perfect addition to any road trip mixtape. Both the Ep and the newbie are free downloads from the bands Bandcamp.
