Methyl Ethel - Rogues

We love our dreamy pop at SPK and Perth group Methyl Ethel is one band that is destined for great things. Their first single 'Rogues' (off their debut full-length record 'Oh Inhuman Spectacle') is a song that sucks you deep into a womb of soft fuzzy guitar sounds, shimmering vocals, and bouncy bass lines. You drift effortlessly, spinning and floating around in circles. Is this a dream you ask? Dreams never felt this good.

Winterbourne - Cold

Winterbourne are an alternate folk duo who released an EP titled 'All But The Sun' earlier this year. Stand out single 'Cold' is an epic ballad that begins with one guitar and one voice. The beauty of 'Cold' is that it builds and becomes more powerful as the song progresses - full of raw emotion and depth. It's the kind of song that could fit perfectly in an Wes Anderson movie. I found myself blissfully humming along till the very last note. If you're in Sydney, then catch Winterbourne live next month.

North Arm - Lately

Sydney four piece North Arm released a very enjoyable single back in May called 'Hollow Days'. The latest single ‘Lately’ is off their forthcoming second EP, LIFE CYCLES (due out in November). Creating ambience is something that North Arm have mastered on this track. A wall of dreamy psychedelia, enriched with hazey, reverb drenched vocals that fill your heart with a feeling of content and nostalgia. If you are in Sydney this weekend be sure to head to the Surry Hills Festival, where North Arm will be performing at 3pm.

FLOWERTRUCK - I Wanna Be With You

The inner-west of Sydney is home to some very in demand acts. Sticky Fingers and DMA's are two bands who have become house hold names and new kids on the block FLOWERTRUCK could become the next big thing. Their new single 'I Wanna Be With You' is full of chiming guitars, lively synths and hearty pop melodies. The four piece have only been around for 4 months and have already played with some of my favourite Sydney bands Step-Panther, High Tails and Hockey Dad. If you like your pop a little left field like I do, then go see these guys live, they won't disappoint.

Friday 26th September - The Metro, Sydney, NSW, Supporting Sticky Fingers (SOLD OUT)
Friday 3rd October - VISIONS, The Bank Hotel, Newtown, NSW w/ *Secret Headliner*, Burn Antares, Zero Likes DJs (DMA's) + Deep Sea Arcade DJ's
Saturday 11th October - Goodgod Small Club, Sydney, NSW, Supporting High Tails w/ The Lulu Raes

Cobwebbs - Easy

An overcrowded dystopian prison. No light reaches the prisoners. Rancid rats feed the flesh of the wicked and four piece Cobwebbs play music for the lost souls who are imprisoned for eternity. Lucky for us, their world is not so bleak. Cobwebbs recorded their latest single in sunny Brisbane and not in some sludge basement in New Jersey. 'Easy' is a dark melting pot of psych, lo-fi garage and drone rock and is off their second LP, 'WORLD WIDE WEBBS' (Out now through the legends at Sonic Masala Records.) Catch these guys in Sydney this weekend, details here.

God K - Skull

Most of God K's music online is from two years ago, so when I saw there was a new song titled 'Skull' I got pretty excited. Only to find out that it was actually recorded in June 2012 lost and now found. I'm glad this gem was found. 'Skull' sounds like Nirvana took a bunch of acid, packed their backpacks, went on a spiritual retreat in Africa, only to lose their shit half way through and armed with their instruments, engaged in an epic battle with the gods. The battle of man vs god was lead by the man himself Colin Thompson (singer/mullet advocate in God K) and the gods, furious with the result flooded nearby villages, thus creating The Hadejia-Nguru wetlands. Well done God K. Hope to hear more music soon.

Multiple Man - Persuasion

I love it when I find new music that instantly perks my ears and I ask myself "Who the fuck is making music like this?" And lucky for me Brisbane duo Multiple Man make the best kind of futuristic music (for cyborgs who want to party like it's 2040). The beats are fresh, the vocals are dark and from listening to 'Persuasion', from their forthcoming 12" MAXISINGLE (release on Nopatience Records (Australia), Burka For Everybody (Spain) I can tell these guys are pushing all the right buttons.

Drunk Mums - Nanganator

Melbourne punk brats Drunk Mums are back with a brand new single titled ‘Nanganator’, a follow up to their grungy banger ‘Plastic’. An ode to Nangs aka bulbs, this two minute high octane punk rock number is as Aussie as Drunk Mums get (is that even possible?). Their accompanying video is worth a squeeze as well. Blowing shit up and hanging inside washing machines is what it's all about. Catch the guys next month when they take their raucous antics on tour.

The Demon Parade - My Hurricane

Melbourne psych-rock band The Demon Parade have a new single out titled ‘My Hurricane'. The band welcome back original member Whill Dempsey to assist in the studio. As a result there is a shift in the groups sound. The reverb drenched vocals and walls of delayed guitar found on last years psych hit 'Open Up Your Mind' are replaced by a sharper and cleaner sound (think The Verve and Spiritualized). 'My Hurricane' is a new direction for the band and will be a treat to see live this October.

NOIRE - Those Days

Back in March, Sydney band NOIRE released their first single 'Pilgrims'. It was a hauntingly beautiful song which made me an instant fan. This week the trio have released a brand new single titled 'Those Days'. Like awaking from a lucid dream, NOIRE make music for our subconscious minds. 'Those Days' flows effortlessly. Delayed guitar and hazy synths build a wall of textured sounds, while Jessica Mincher's vocals carry plenty of mystique and soul on this track. You can catch NOIRE play live for free at 1pm on the Velvet Cave Stage at Surry Hills Festival on Saturday 27th September in Sydney.

Lanks - Brave Man

Back in January I fell in love with a song called 'Rise and Falls' by Melbourne solo artist Lanks (Will Cumming). Three months ago Lanks released an EP called 'Thousand Piece Puzzle'. A solid five track release. 'Brave Man' is his latest single and shows a maturity in his writing. There is plenty of atmospheric synths, glitchy electronic drumming and Lanks' effortlessly smooth vocals. 'Brave man' takes you on a journey far above the cloud line. You hope you'll never have to come back down. I know I didn't, so I pressed play once more.

YEEVS - Speakin' Some Sense

We all love Sydney snotty punk band Birds with Thumbs. When I heard that bassist Tom Bamford had a side project with members of Bradley Cork and the Folklore Mantra called YEEVS, I had to check them out. And lucky for me (and you) their debut single 'Speakin' Some Sense' is first rate garage sludge. It grips you by the gonads and seamlessly releases them, so you can breath a little and jump head first back into the mosh pit.

Burn Antares - Crystal Love

Sydney band Burn Antares are back with another groovy single. Titled 'Crystal Love' (off their forthcoming EP - 'Fur Coat & The Peace Boat', due October 2014). The song takes you on a rock'n'roll journey back to the 60's, free love is flourishing and rock'n'roll is finding it's feet. 'Crystal Love' is also accompanied by a neat video. The band hangs out with their friends, enjoys a little Mary Jane and ends up playing a top a massive rock in the bush - looks like a lot of fun to make. You best put on your best paisley outfit and catch these guys live, as they are touring this month.

Soviet X-Ray Record Club - Good Things [I Only Think Of]

"You better wake up. The world you live in is just a sugar-coated topping! There is another world beneath it: the real world. And if you wanna survive it, you better learn to PULL THE TRIGGER!" Yep, I'm quoting Blade because Soviet X-Ray Record Club should have been on the soundtrack. SXRC aren't your usual sunny Brisbane band. These guys make dark, driving music for your soul. Listen to their last two singles 'Never Enough' & 'Magnetic North' and you can tell they mean serious business. New single 'Good Things [I Only Think Of]' is a silver hollow-point bullet filled with garlic to heart. Let's hope their forthcoming LP 'Wake' (due out 24th October) will awake the blood god!
