Welcome to the first SPK Xmas Mix, even though we have only been around for 6 months, we have featured some of the most talented & promising Aussie acts this country has to offer. Here are 10 tracks that stand out for me in 2013. Most have been on repeat and they are in no particular order as I believe each song is first-class and also because rating things 1-10 blows! Enjoy the mix, the silly season and we will see you in 2014 with more great music.

Dorsal Fins - Nothing Left To Hide

Dorsal fins are located on the backs of various unrelated marine and freshwater vertebrates (it helps them from rolling) and also happens to be the studio-only project of Liam McGorry (Saskwatch). Featuring guest vocals from Jarrad Brown (Eagle and the Worm), 'Nothing Left To Hide' is the first track off the upcoming debut 12" 'Gripless' which is due for release early 2014.

Cool Drinks - Don't Look Back

If you're a fan of bands like Buzz Kull and The Soft Moon, then I'm sure you'll enjoy Cool Drinks. Cool Drinks started as the bed room project of Matthew Cribb in Melbourne in 2012. The new self titled EP is currently out and I have to say it's pretty dam good. Written, recorded and mixed by Matt, this EP show's Cool Drinks experiment with some new equipment and sounds. 'Don't Look Back' is my favorite track of the EP but you can make your own mind up when you stream the EP below, and if you're a fan then pre order yourself a limited edition cassette from Osborne Again Bandcamp

The Good Sports - Out Of The Way

There must be something in the Brisbane water! I have stumbled upon yet another great lo-fi garage band, they call themselves The Good Sports and their debut single 'Out Of The Way' is a summer time feel good track with plenty of reverb. You can download this one for a very handsome name your price from their bandcamp and/or wait for their EP which is out early next year - Should be a killer.

Jules Ferrari - Comin' Home

Sydney musician Jules Ferrari has played with psych lords The Dolly Rocker Movement, indie darlings Songs and one of my favorite bands from the last 10 years The Black Ryder. With a wealth of experience behind her, we see her release a new track called 'Comin' Home', it might be the only track you'll find on her Sound Cloud but her distinctive, unflinching vocal style complements her weary strumming. She calls it Holy folk and we can't wait to hear more.

Driffs - Back To Bellevue

Sydney surf pop band Driffs are back with a new single 'Back To Bellevue'. This song could be about returning to one of Sydney's wealthiest suburbs Bellevue Hill or it could be about a girl or it could be about Alf from Home & Away, who knows? but what ever the track is about it's a perfect example of Driffs sound, catchy feel good slacker pop that will have you downloading this one for FREE and having it on repeat through out the summer.

Jesse Davidson - Big Bois Gotta Eat

At 17 years of age, Jesse Davidson has a sound beyond his years. That said, his latest single 'Big Bois Gotta Eat' was co-produced by Jake Miller and Jack Moffitt (The Preatures guitarist) who also played guitar and bass on the track and fellow Preatures band mate Luke Davison drummed on the track, so surrounding yourself with good musicians can only make your music stronger and this track is a great example of good song writing and production. His debut EP drops next year, but you can catch him in December supporting Canadian Mac Demarco on his Australia tour

The Hollow Bones - Hot Press

John, Rik, and Harry are three dudes who make up Newtown rock'n'roll outfit The Hollow Bones. They just released their latest single 'Hot Press'. Loud-in-your-face garage rock that will have you throwing a house party, drinking raucously and partying till the wee hours of the morning. And that's precisely what the boys did for the 'Hot Press' video, filmed at the Sticky Fingers pad, it's nothing but good times, good people and good tunes. Check out the clip here, download the track below and if your in Sydney go to the officially launched Friday, 13th December at Spectrum, you won't be disappointed.

The Walking Who - Take My Picture

Psychedelic Rockers The Walking Who have given us a new track from their MANSIONS EP called 'Take My Picture'. Not as hard hitting rock'n'roll as their past work, such as 'Candy Flu'. 'Take My Picture' has a more atmospheric feel, the guitar and vocals build nicely as the drums and bass drive this track forward. Their video is also in the same vain, with an array of kaleidoscopic colours, aural landscapes and hazy illusions.
